1.  Guidelines for Submitting an Abstract

OFFICIAL LANGUAGE:  All abstracts must be submitted in English. Translation services will not be available during the conference, so all oral and poster presentations must also be given in English.

ABSTRACT LIMIT:  To ensure maximum participation, each attendee is allowed to present no more than two abstracts: one oral presentation and one poster presentation.

Attendees who have been invited to speak as part of an organized symposium or workshop are still limited to two abstracts, but may submit both as oral presentations – one for the invited session and one for general sessions.

PRESENTING AUTHOR:  The person submitting an abstract is assumed to be the presenting author. Abstract acceptances will apply only to this person and are not transferable to co-authors. The presenting author must register for the conference before the deadline for presenter registration on July 15, 2013. Presenters not registered by this date will not be included in the scientific program and will not have their abstract(s) published in the conference proceedings.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: All abstracts must be submitted no later than 11:59pm EST on May 15, 2013 via the online submission form provided below.

Please do not submit an abstract if you are not confident that you will be able to attend the conference and make the presentation.

REQUIRED INFORMATION:  The following information is required; incomplete or inaccurate abstracts will be rejected.

Presentation Type

Please indicate whether you are submitting an abstract for a Contributed Oral or Contributed Poster presentation. If you have been invited to present as part of a Symposium or Workshop being organized by another attendee, please select one of these two presentation types. You will then be asked to indicate the title of the Symposium or Workshop and the lead organizer.

Title

Please avoid the temptation to use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!

Only capitalize the first word, the word following a colon and all proper nouns and adjectives as shown in the example below. Italicize Latin species names.

* Example: Ecological restoration in areas invaded by gorse (Ulex europaeus L.): An experience in the Colombian Andes

Abstract

Provide a concise statement (max 250 words) of the topic or issue to be discussed and a summary of the major findings and conclusions.

* Your abstract will be reproduced in the conference program verbatim, so please italicize all Latin species names and follow commonly accepted rules of English syntax, grammar, and punctuation. Poorly written abstracts and abstracts not directly relevant to the field of ecological restoration will be rejected.

Session Moderator

Please indicate whether you would be willing to moderate the session in which your abstract is placed. Session moderators will introduce oral presenters, keep track of time, and facilitate question/answer periods following presentations.

Candidate for Best Student Paper/Poster

Students who wish to be considered for best student paper or poster presentation should indicate this on the online submission form in order to be included in the judging process. The student must be the primary author and presenter, and must submit the abstract under his/her name.

Presenting Author

Provide the presenting author’s name, institutional affiliation and contact details.

Please avoid the temptation to use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!

* Note that the information provided in this section will appear in the conference program and book of abstracts exactly as submitted, so please avoid spelling errors and provide the complete name of your company, organization, or institution (followed by acronyms if appropriate).

* Also note that all communications regarding your abstract will be directed to the email address you provide, so please ensure that it is entered correctly.

Contributing Authors

List any and all co-authors in the order you would like them to appear in the book of abstracts.

Please avoid the temptation to use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!

* Note that the information provided in this section will be reproduced in the conference materials verbatim, so please avoid spelling errors and provide the complete name of companies, organizations, and institutions (followed by acronyms if appropriate).

2.  Evaluation Process and Criteria

The SER2013 Scientific Program Committee will review abstracts on a rolling basis beginning in February 2013. The Committee will contact authors with formal acceptance or rejection notices as soon as possible in order to allow presenters sufficient time to register for the conference and make travel arrangements. All notifications will be sent to the email address provided during the abstract submission process.

The Committee will make the final decision with regard to the acceptance or rejection of all abstracts. In rare cases, abstracts submitted for oral presentations may be accepted on the condition that they instead be presented as posters.

Abstracts will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • scientific merit, with emphasis on new research results, cutting-edge developments and novel perspectives
  • direct relevance to the field of ecological restoration and applicability to restoration science, management, policy and education. Click here for a list of key topics and themes.
  • submission of a clearly written, well organized abstract that begins with a concise statement of the topic or issue and ends with a substantive conclusion
  • adherence to the submission guidelines outlined above

Abstracts not meeting these criteria, as determined by the SER2013 Scientific Program Committee, will be rejected.

3.  After Your Abstract is Accepted

Registration

All accepted presenters must register for the conference before the deadline on July 15, 2013. Presenters not registered by this date will not be included in the scientific program and will not have their abstract(s) published in the conference proceedings.

Abstract acceptances apply only to the person who submitted the abstract and are not transferable to co-authors.

US Visas

Attendees traveling to the conference from outside of the US may be required to obtain a visitor visa. For more information, click here.

Scheduling

The SER2013 Scientific Program Committee will schedule all oral presentations and finalize the scientific program in July 2013. Presentations will be organized into sessions by topic, and the Committee will make every effort to ensure optimal placement of each speaker.

Presentations may be scheduled any time from the morning of Monday, October 7 through the afternoon of Thursday, October 10, and it is expected that all presenters will be available during any of these time slots. Special scheduling requests will not be accommodated, and talks will not be moved once scheduling is complete.

In August, the schedule-at-a-glance will be posted on the conference website and circulated to accepted presenters via email so they can make note of the day, time and session in which they will be presenting.

Dissemination of abstracts

Abstracts will be published in the SER2013 Book of Abstracts and disseminated to all conference attendees in electronic format. Following the conference, the book of abstracts will be made publicly available on SER websites in pdf format. SER will not publish abstracts in any other format.

More detailed information for presenters can be found by clicking here.

4.  Cancellation Policy

Please do not submit an abstract if you are not confident that you will be able to attend the conference and make the presentation. Cancellations impose a serious burden on the Conference Organizing Committee and negatively impact the overall quality of the scientific program.

If your presentation has been accepted but extenuating circumstances prevent your attendance, we ask that you attempt to find another individual to make the presentation and notify us of this change as soon as possible at SERabstracts@meetgreen.com. If cancellation becomes absolutely unavoidable, please contact us immediately at the aforementioned email address so we can remove your presentation from the conference program.
